Sheldon, Iowa — We now know the reason Sheldon experienced a power outage on Friday, December 13th.
MidAmerican Energy spokesperson Geoff Greenwood tells us that since early October, MidAmerican has been working on replacing equipment at the Sheldon substation to improve the long-term reliability of the substation. Late last week, MidAmerican crews completed those replacements. While this project was underway, the normal substation was unavailable, so, he says, crews connected a portable substation parked on-site to continue to serve customers.
Shortly before noon on Friday, Greenwood says crews were transferring power back to the normal substation, when an outage occurred unexpectedly, affecting approximately 2,700 customers. In about ten minutes, they were able to restore service and then successfully completed the transfer process. Greenwood says all their customers in the Sheldon area are now being served by the normal substation.
