George Firefighters Called To Wood Fire Near Propane Tank

George, Iowa — The George Fire Department was called out for a fire on Thursday, February 12, 2026, near George.

According to George Fire Chief Bill Sprock, at about 3:45 p.m., the George Fire Department was called to the report of a log pile on fire at 1741 Jefferson Avenue, about four miles north of the west side of George.

When they got there, the chief says the fire department saw a burn barrel and a wood pile on fire. He says they used water and foam to fight the fire. He says the homeowners were burning in a trash barrel. The wind started the grass on fire, which burned up to a 20-percent-filled propane tank, and then started a wood pile on fire. Sprock says the propane tank was OK and did not explode.

Sprock says no injuries were reported.

Chief Sprock reports that actual damage was minimal.

He says the firefighters who responded were on the scene for between an hour and an hour and a half, and were assisted by the George Emergency Medical Service, or GEMS.
