George Man Taken To Hospital After Fiery Crash Near Ritter

Ritter, Iowa– A George man was taken to the hospital after an accident near Ritter on Thursday, August 28, 2025.

The Iowa State Patrol reports that at about 2:30 p.m., 21-year-old Jonathan Van Meeteren of George was driving a 2014 Ram pickup eastbound on Northwest Boulevard, north of Ritter. They tell us that 51-year-old Leonardo Perez Hernandez of Hialeah, Florida, was southbound on Highway 60 in a 2019 Peterbilt.

The report says that Van Meetern was facing east at the stop sign for Highway 60. He proceeded forward and failed to yield to the semi that Perez Hernandez was driving. The vehicles collided in the intersection. Van Meetern’s pickup came to rest in the southwest ditch and caught fire.

The Sheldon Community Ambulance Team (SCAT) took Van Meeteren to Sanford Sheldon Hospital.

The preliminary report doesn’t list amount of damage to the vehicles.

Ambulance crews, firefighters, and EMA personnel from Sheldon assisted with the response to the crash.
