Hartley Man Accused Of Sex Offender Registry Violation

Hartley, Iowa — A Hartley man has been arrested on a charge of sex offender registration violation in Hartley.

According to a criminal complaint filed with the O’Brien County Clerk of Court’s Office by the county sheriff’s office, 24-year-old Robert Fortin of Hartley is accused of failing to notify the sheriff’s office about changes to his status. He was arrested on Wednesday, August 21st.

In his statement, the deputy says Fortin is a registered sex offender in the state of Iowa and failed to notify the sheriff’s office within five business days of a change in employment. The deputy says Fortin also failed to register a change in residency within five business days. The deputy says Fortin also has a prior conviction for the same charge.

Fortin was charged with sex offender registration violation, second or subsequent offense, a class D felony. If convicted, Fortin could face up to five years in prison.

Fortin faces a preliminary hearing on the charge on September 11th.

At last report, Fortin remained in the O’Brien County Jail in Primghar in lieu of bond.
