Hawarden & Ireton Firefighters Extinguish Field Fire

Hawarden, Iowa — Thirty acres of cornstalks were destroyed in a fire on Thursday, October 3, 2024, near Hawarden.

According to Hawarden Fire Chief Payne Allen, at about 2:15 p.m., the Hawarden Fire Department was called to the report of cornstalks on fire at K22 and Highway 10, four miles east of Hawarden.

The chief says the fire department saw heavy smoke and wind-driven fire in a cornstalk field as they approached the scene. He says they used water from grass rigs but transitioned to six tractors with disks to fight the fire.

Allen says no injuries were reported.

The Ireton Fire Department assisted the Hawarden firefighters.

He says the cause of the fire is undetermined. He says it was not due to a combine or baler as there was no work being done in the field at the time of the fire.

Chief Allen reports that about 30 acres of cornstalks burned in the blaze.

He says the firefighters who responded were on the scene for about an hour and a half.
