Le Mars Public Library Celebrates Its Sesquicentennial

Le Mars, Iowa (RI) — The Le Mars Public Library is marking a big milestone with its 150th anniversary this week.

A celebration on Wednesday featured cake, speeches, an unveiling of new library card designs, and a proclamation from Mayor Rob Bixenman.

Library director Shirley Taylor says the library was founded on March 11th, 1876, and it started off as a paid membership service. The city then took over operations in 1885.

Taylor says there are events planned every month for the next several months to celebrate the library’s sesquicentennial.

The celebrations will conclude on August 6th with the 150th Celebration Bash at the library.
