Rock Rapids, Iowa — The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office is assisting in the investigation into the disappearance of a 14-year-old whose body was found near Brookings, South Dakota, on Thursday morning, March 19th.
Sioux Falls Police say 14-year-old McKenna Wendel of Sioux Falls went missing on Friday, March 13th, and the police were notified on Sunday, March 15th. They say there were some suspicious circumstances to Wendel’s not being located.
South Dakota agencies and the FBI are joined by the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office and the Rock County (Minnesota) Sheriff’s Office. Sioux Falls Police say the investigation uncovered multiple venues, including Lyon and Rock counties. They say Wendel and others may have been in those areas, but they’re not releasing any more information than that regarding Lyon and Rock counties.
They tell us an uncle has been mentioned on social media, but they emphasized that the results of the autopsy have not come back, and since they don’t know if there was a crime, they have no suspects at this time. They also say they don’t believe the public is at risk.
The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office has released a statement saying they continue to provide assistance during the investigation, and that any further information will come from the Sioux Falls Police Department.
