Lyon County Sheriff’s Office Adds School Resource Officer Position

Rock Rapids, Iowa — The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office now has a School Resource Officer program.

Lyon County Deputy Bill Minor has been named the School Resource Officer or “SRO.” He tells us about it.

Minor tells us he deals with students of all ages in nearly all of the county’s schools.

He says part of his job is public relations — helping students become comfortable with the presence of a law enforcement officer.

He says he’s getting a great reception from all the schools.

Lyon County schools have had school liaison officers for several years. Minor tells us how the two roles differ and how they cooperate.

Deputy Minor says he doesn’t want to release or even have a regular schedule, because he doesn’t want to be too predictable — so that students or people who might want to do them harm or commit a crime don’t know when he might be there.

Minor started in the SRO role just a few weeks ago at the beginning of the school year.
