Rock Rapids, Iowa (Sioux County Radio) — Rock Rapids City Councilman Dr. Cody Hoefert has announced he is running for Lyon County Supervisor.
Hoefert is seeking the District 4 seat currently held by Jerry Birkey, who has served on the Lyon County Board of Supervisors since 2019 and has announced he will not seek reelection. The district includes much of the Doon area and part of Rock Rapids.
Hoefert says the opening on the board helped prompt his decision to run after more than a decade and a half in city government.
Hoefert says during his time on the Rock Rapids City Council, the community has experienced economic growth while lowering its tax levy.
He says when he first took office, Rock Rapids ranked among the highest-taxed municipalities in Iowa, but now sits in the bottom half of cities for tax rates.
Hoefert says addressing property assessments will also be a key issue in the campaign, noting that rapidly rising property valuations have placed pressure on homeowners.
He also says rural infrastructure will be an important priority if elected, particularly as agriculture continues to evolve.
Hoefert says improving roads and bridges that connect farmland and rural communities will be essential to supporting the county’s agricultural economy.
In addition to his city council experience, Hoefert has also been active in state and local politics. He served for many years as Lyon County Republican Party chairman or co-chairman and previously served as co-chairman of the Republican Party of Iowa.
He says those relationships could help ensure rural counties like Lyon County have a voice at the state level.
Hoefert is the owner and founder of Lyon County Chiropractic in Rock Rapids. He says he now plans to spend the coming months meeting voters across the Fourth District ahead of the June Republican primary.
