Officers Remind People Not To Over-Share When Posting Back-To-School Pictures

Sioux County K9 Officer McGrath shows what information could be and what information shouldn’t be shared on social media.

Northwest Iowa — With classes starting this Friday at many northwest Iowa schools, and in the near future in the other schools, law enforcement experts are reminding parents not too include TOO much information in those cute back-to-school photos people like to post to social media.

The Sioux County Sheriff’s office has released a few helpful hints that they say parents should keep in mind. They say remember, photos of your child on your front step should NOT show identifiers such as house number, street name, family name, or your child’s school name. Deputies say, “Trust us, there are people with bad intentions out there: predators, identity thieves, etc. Just remember, once posted, any photo can be used in places and for things many people could never imagine.”

They tell us that another thing to consider to help you keep your photos out of the possession of scammers and the ill-intentioned is to limit your audience. They advise you to adjust your privacy settings to make them more restrictive: Friends only, close friends, family, etc. They say don’t tag your kids if they have their own social media. If you do want the picture with the above information for a special memory, then edit or blur any personal information on the pictures you post.
