Paullina Man Faces Felony Eluding Charge In Sioux County

Hull, Iowa — A Paullina man has been arrested on a felony eluding charge after a pursuit in Sioux County.

According to a criminal complaint filed with the Sioux County Clerk of Court’s Office by the county sheriff’s office, 37-year-old Andrew Hulstein of Paullina is accused of eluding an officer. He was arrested on Sunday.

In his statement, the deputy says he attempted to stop Hulstein back on August 4th. The deputy says the person the vehicle was registered to was under license suspension. But Hulstein took off on him, allegedly racking up multiple violations, and ultimately exited into South Dakota, so the pursuit was terminated. He was found about 30 minutes later walking toward Hawarden and was arrested for violation of parole. A fellow inmate informed deputies what Hulstein had allegedly told him about the incident, and Hulstein was then charged with eluding.

Eluding in this case is a class C felony. If convicted, Hulstein could face up to ten years in prison. He also faces several misdemeanor charges, including five counts of stop sign violation, failure to obey traffic control device, speeding, no insurance, and reckless driving.

He faces a preliminary hearing on September 9th.

At last report, Hulstein remained in the Sioux County Jail in Orange City in lieu of a $10,000 bond on the eluding case and a $20,000 bond on the violation of parole case.
