Northwest Iowa — Could we have a derecho in northwest Iowa later tonight? It’s not impossible.
The National Weather Service has been talking about the possibility of severe weather tonight for a day or two. Andrew Samet, a meteorologist with the weather service’s Sioux Falls office, tells us what we can expect.
He says as the storms form, they could become a derecho, which is a line of strong storms.
As far as definitions, Samet tells us that all derechos are lines of thunderstorms, but not all lines of thunderstorms are derechos.
He says that due to the potential for tornado-like damage, if such a storm does threaten, they will be setting off people’s phones with an alert similar to a tornado warning.
