Northwest Iowa — Voters in the Sheldon Community School District approved — and voters in the Sibley/Ocheyedan Community School District defeated — measures to extend the districts’ physical plant and equipment levy for ten more years.
School district officials tell us the physical plant and equipment levy — commonly called PPEL — is one of the primary revenue sources for funding the schools’ maintenance and equipment needs.
In the Sheldon Community School District, the measure passed by over 73 percent.
But in the Sibley/Ocheyedan Community School District, it was a different story. There, the PPEL measure failed — only receiving about 22 percent of the vote.
So the Sheldon Community School District’s PPEL will be extended for another 10 years, while the Sibley/Ocheyedan Community School District’s PPEL will not continue.
The results of the elections are not official until canvassed.
