Sheldon, Iowa – On Tuesday, the Sheldon Middle School held its 30th Annual 8th Grade Science Fair. The competition involved students designing a controlled experiment to help solve a problem or answer a question.
The winner of this year’s fair was Lexi Cannoy. Her project answered how the type of insulation affects temperature inside and outside a wall after blowing heat through the wall.
Sharing second place was Darren Vollink and Ike Thiner. Their project centered around testing different types of chicken food, seeing how they affect the weight of chicks after three weeks.
In third place was Cooper Craig. His project examined different types of disinfectants used on the middle school’s door handles, testing the amount of bacterial growth each disinfectant may or may not prevent.
Earning honorable mentions for their projects were Ellodie Reinstma, Jovyleen Jiro, Kenley Robinson, Margot Michels, Anneke Van Beek, Parker Koel-Schmidt, Parker Lottman, Kypton Leinbaug, Avi Kamstra, and Brooke Iedema.
The top three winners will move on to the State Science and Technology Fair of Iowa competition, which will be held virtually this year.
