Rock Rapids Man Taken To Hospital After Crash At Casino Entrance

Larchwood, Iowa– A Rock Rapids man was taken to a hospital after a crash near Larchwood on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, and authorities are looking for one of the vehicles involved.

The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office reports that at about 7:00 a.m., 57-year-old James Schabacker of Rock Rapids was driving a 2018 Hyundai eastbound on Grand Falls Boulevard (the entrance for Grand Falls Casino), five and a half miles northwest of Larchwood.

The report says that Shabacker’s Hyundai was struck head-on by another vehicle, which had been traveling westbound in the eastbound lane. The other vehicle then fled the area. They tell us the vehicle that left the scene was described as a white vehicle with a male driver with short hair, but they have not found the vehicle or driver.

The Med-Star Ambulance, based in Brandon, South Dakota, transported Schabacker to Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls.

Schabacker’s Hyundai sustained $5000 in damages. It is not known how much damage the other vehicle may have received.

Lyon County Sheriff Brian Hilt tells us the accident remains under investigation.
