Rock Valley CSD Building Back After Flood; Will Start Later Than Other Schools

Rock Valley, Iowa — The Rock Valley Community School District is making progress in their return to normalcy after the major flood in late June.

Superintendent Matt Van Voorst gives us an update.

We asked him how many of their facilities were affected by the flood.

We asked him if anybody has any idea how much this is all going to cost.

A bond issue had passed in the district this past November, and Van Voorst says they were just barely started with the very preliminary stages of that when the flood hit.

He says, of course, that will mean higher costs, but that’s where they are at this point.

He tells us their priorities in all of this.

The Rock Valley Community School District is also receiving a temporary structure through the State of Iowa. It will have six classrooms and will be built on the school site. Van Voorst says it will be used as a swing space in which they will rotate classes in and out of as their regular classrooms are getting finished.

Van Voorst says K-2 will actually start the year at Trinity Reformed Church. The hope is they will be able to come back to the school in three to four weeks after classes start.
