Sac County Sheriff Assaulted at Home Prior to Resignation

Sac City, Iowa — New details have emerged in the abrupt resignation of Sac County Sheriff Jonathon Meyer, revealing the former sheriff was seriously injured in an alleged assault at his home just days before stepping down.

Court documents confirm Meyer was the victim of an assault at his Sac City home on August 25th. Sac City police say 33-year-old Matthew Birt attacked Meyer in front of his young child, causing serious injuries, including a concussion, facial fractures, and a torn ear requiring stitches.

Birt was arrested on September 2nd and charged with two felonies: assault on a peace officer with intent to injure and willful injury causing serious injury. He remains held on a $35,000 cash-only bond in the Buena Vista County Jail. A preliminary hearing is set for September 15th.

The incident reportedly began over a personal dispute. Witnesses say Meyer did not fight back and repeatedly told Birt to stop. The attack occurred while Meyer was off-duty, but Sac County Attorney Ben Smith noted that sheriffs are considered “on duty” at all times under Iowa law.

Smith has recused himself from the case, appointing Greene County Attorney Thomas Laehn as special prosecutor. He also confirmed Meyer has resumed his previous role as sergeant and emphasized there’s no evidence he violated any laws or policies.

Chief Deputy Katie Stange is now serving as interim sheriff. The Sac County Board of Supervisors has 40 days to appoint a successor or call a special election.
