Sanford Sheldon May Donate Land For Use As New SCAT Garage

Sheldon, Iowa — The Sheldon City Council met on Wednesday afternoon in the council chambers at the Sheldon Community Services Center.

There were two comments during the levy hearing meeting, and both basically stated that taxes should be lower as seniors may have a hard time paying them.

The council then moved into the regular meeting. They approved the consent agenda.

They approved the third readings of both the amendment pertaining to illegal dumping and the one requiring recyclable items that are placed curbside to fit in compliant cans. They did, however, table the discussion about the new contract with De Kruif Disposal.

After some discussion, they decided to table the matter of approving a new agreement with Center Benefits for HR services, until they could get some answers.

Due to some congestion, officials with Sheldon Christian School requested no parking on the east side of Garfield Avenue during school hours. This was approved.

There was lots of discussion about precedent and how a request should be handled for transient merchant permits for the outdoor vendor fair to be put on by Bliss Salon and Spa on June 12th and 13th. It was decided to approve the permit with the addition of a $100 fee this year.

The council then approved the West Highway 18 and D Street Drainage and the Wyman and 16th culvert replacement project plans and specs, and set bid opening and public hearing dates.

There was some discussion on the need for more room for Sheldon emergency services. It was mentioned at the meeting that Sanford Sheldon may donate land for a new SCAT garage, which would free up some space in the emergency services building. It was decided to see what the department heads say as to a plan if SCAT moves out. The public will be consulted when the needs and ideas have come forward. SCAT and council representatives will meet with Sanford officials and will provide a preliminary update at the May 20th council meeting.
