Scammers Claim To Be Sioux County Deputies

Orange City, Iowa – The Sioux County Sheriff’s Office is actively investigating a scam in which individuals posing as deputies are contacting family members of people recently booked into the Sioux County Jail.

According to Sioux County Sheriff Jamie Van Voorst, the scammer—often calling from a private or spoofed number—claims to be a deputy and says the inmate can be released if the family pays bail online or covers the cost of an ankle monitor.

Van Voorst says the Sioux County Sheriff’s Office will never contact anyone by phone to request or collect money, including bail, fines, or fees of any kind. Anyone receiving such a call should hang up immediately and not provide any personal or financial information.

If you have questions or believe you may have been targeted, you’re asked to call Deputy Harmelink at 712-737-3307.
