School Starts For Most Northwest Iowa Students On Monday

Northwest Iowa — For the great majority of northwest Iowa K-12 students, these are the last few days of summer freedom before school starts for the 2025-26 school year.

There are only three different dates on which public school and private high school students go back to school in our four-county area.

The great majority of schools have their first day of school this coming Monday, August 25th. Those would include, in alphabetical order:

Boyden-Hull
Central Lyon
Gehlen Catholic
Harris-Lake Park
Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn (HMS)
MOC/Floyd Valley
Rock Valley
Sheldon East Elementary
Sheldon Middle School
Sibley-Ocheyedan
Sioux Center
South O’Brien
Trinity Christian (Hull)
Unity Christian (Orange City)
Western Christian (Hull)

One school district starts school the very next day — Tuesday, August 26th — George/Little Rock.

Three schools start a week later — Tuesday, September 2nd — the day after Labor Day.

Sheldon High School
West Lyon
West Sioux

And while we’ve said it a number of times, it bears repeating — Sheldon East Elementary and Middle School students start the same day as most other schools — this coming Monday, August 25th. But due to construction at the high school, the first day of school for Sheldon High School Students is Tuesday, September 2nd.
