Severe Weather Claims Hog Building Near Hospers

Northwest Iowa — Severe thunderstorms rumbled through our part of northwest Iowa Monday evening.

The damage ranged from zero in many areas to thunderstorm wind damage destroying a hog building near Hospers. Debris from that building was strewn across Highway 60 and required cleanup that took at least a couple of hours.

Sioux County Emergency Management Director Nate Huizenga says that was the main issue in Sioux County, along with some flash flooding north of Hull. Highway 75 was flooded near 300th Street, two miles north of Perkins Corner, by heavy rain.

O’Brien County EMA Director Jared Johnson says in O’Brien County, there were some tree branches down in some rural areas, and a powerline down on Nest Avenue. In Sheldon, there was some flash flooding along several streets.

Johnson says he’s assisting Lyon County EMA this week while their EMA Director, Arden Kopischke, is out of the office. Johnson says there was some mixed hail in Lyon County. (nickel, dime, quarter-sized) He says most of it was several miles south of Rock Rapids, traveling east.

The National Weather Service received several hail reports in our area, including 1.75″ hail near Ireton, 0.75″ hail near Sioux Center, 1″ hail near Rock Valley, 1-1.25″ hail near Doon, 0.88″ hail near Hull, and 1.5″ hail near Sioux Center.

There were also several reports of significant rain, including 2.83 inches, five miles southwest of George, 2.76 inches a mile south-southeast of Sioux Center, 2.46 inches, six miles north of Ireton, and 2.11 inches a mile south-southwest of Hawarden. The official amount recorded at KIWA in Sheldon was 1.28 inches.
