Sheldon City Council Holds Special Flood Damage Meeting

Sheldon, Iowa — The Sheldon City Council met in special session on Monday afternoon.

The consent agenda only included the minutes of the previous meeting and a list of claims, and was approved. The bulk of the meeting was updates from various City departments in regard to the flooding.

During the meeting, Public Works Director Todd Uhl gave reports for several departments. As for water and wastewater, Uhl says things should be on the way back to normal.

Sheldon EMA Director Wayne Barahona says he was impressed with how everyone worked together and complied with the City’s requests, making things easier for everyone.

Sheldon Mayor Greg Geels says there was good news mixed in with the bad.

Sheldon City Manager Sam Kooiker says there are now dumpsters on the east side of City Park for the public to get rid of flood-damaged debris. He reminds people not to dump appliances, tires, electronics, trees, etc. in those dumpsters.

Two contractors will also be doing curbside flood recovery pickup. He says they are asking everyone to do their best to have their stuff (flood items only) curbside by Thursday morning, June 27 (preferably on concrete – they will not repair lawns). He says they realize this isn’t much time, but many people have already pulled their stuff out so we want to get started, but there will be another round if you aren’t ready yet. He says Boer & Sons will start from the east and ID Excavating from the west.

At the meeting they also discussed what to do with flood-damaged appliances, but at last report, there was not a plan for those yet.
