Sheldon City Council One Step Closer To Children’s World Pilot Project

Sheldon, Iowa — The Sheldon City Council met in regular session on Wednesday afternoon.

They approved the consent agenda. They were told that the MidSioux representative was unavailable, so that item will be moved to the June 18th meeting.

The council approved the final pay estimate (#4) for the Oak Street project. They held a public hearing for a budget amendment for the current fiscal year. No comments were made, and the amendment was approved.

The council also held two public hearings on the pilot project with Children’s World for the city to help pay some of the costs for infants. City Manager Sam Kooiker says it is a pilot project and may not be approved next time, but they’re looking forward to seeing how well it works.

After two more public hearings with no comments, the council proceeded to hold the first hearings on ordinances that would raise the price of water and sewer service in Sheldon. They also did the same thing for a new storm water fee. There was one written comment on that, and the person was against the idea.

Public Works Director Todd Uhl:

The council also voted to accept two new people for the Sheldon Community Ambulance Team (SCAT).

Joel Gesink gave an insurance update, and advised the council that some premiums are going up.

Representatives of the Sheldon High School CAPS team were also there and talked about the arch monument that they want to put in at 421 3rd Avenue, along Highway 18, east of the former Italian Cowboy/Godfathers property. There will also be some plants and trees. They tell us the cost estimate for construction is $146,000. They will look into any possible grants and private donations. Funding had not been discussed much until this time, and they will be working on that next.

The council also talked a little about park planning during City Manager Sam Kooiker’s report portion of the meeting.
