Sheldon Council Approves Rezoning

Sheldon, Iowa — The Sheldon City Council met in regular session on Wednesday evening.

They approved the consent agenda with one minor change — a date change to October 10th for the Sheldon Fire Company’s street closure. Click here for the meeting agenda to see what was on the consent agenda.

On the issue of a zoning change for a property at 620 3rd Avenue with a dwelling on it that’s actually in an area zoned “arterial commercial,” no one seemed to have any objections to re-zoning the parcel as “residential multiple.” There were no live or written comments during the public hearing. The council passed the resolution, then passed the first reading of the ordinance and waived the second and third readings of the ordinance. They also approved the new zoning map for the City of Sheldon. All votes were unanimous. City Manager Sam Kooiker told the council that the difference in zoning would have been okay with most mortgage lenders, but this was to be an FHA loan, which requires residential zoning. Council member Brad Hindt wanted to make sure that any owners or future owners realized that at any time, a business could move in next door, as they didn’t change the surrounding zoning, just the zoning for that property.

The City Council then went into closed session to discuss matters of the Police Chief vacancy.
