Sheldon Council Grants Special Tobacco License

Sheldon, Iowa — The Sheldon City Council met on Wednesday afternoon. The first meeting was to accept public comments on the proposed property tax levy. No one rose to speak, and there were also no written comments about the issue. The council adjourned and then reconvened for the regular council meeting.

They approved the consent agenda. In so doing, they approved the minutes from the last council meeting, the list of claims, the acceptance of the resignation of Recreation Director Trevor Cast, pay application number one for Western Avenue, a resolution approving a temporary revocable license from Iowa Army National Guard for the Western Avenue project, the approval of the hiring of Matt Burrington as a water operator, the approval of a beer permit for Dollar General and a liquor license for Stammer Liquor, the offering of a full-time police officer position to Jager Roozeboom, a resolution temporarily creating a full-time police officer position, and the acceptance of the resignation of full-time Sheldon Community Ambulance Team member Dianne Wolthuizen (who will stay on as a volunteer EMT).

In old business, the council revisited the tobacco license for Highway Liquor and Smoke Shop to allow the selling of devices made of glass or metal for smoking tobacco. It seemed all questions were answered and the loose ends had been tied up, except for some missing guidance from the State, but the council voted to approve the license.

In new business, they approved setting April 16 as a public hearing date for the full budget adoption. Council members also voted to re-appoint City Attorney Micah Schreurs for a period of three years.

During the reports section of the meeting, Public Works Director Todd Uhl reminded people that road construction season is upon us.

Uhl says that there will be lots of temporary roads and ways around the Western Avenue project, but as always, some people may have to park and walk a little further than normal, which is unfortunately unavoidable.
