Sheldon, Iowa — The Sheldon Farmers Market is underway for the summer of 2025. Sheldon Chamber Director Trista Kavanagh tells us about it.
If you are older and meet some income requirements, you can even get some help purchasing fresh fruits and vegetables. The Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program (SFMNP) is a Congressionally-authorized program administered by the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship in cooperation with the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services. SFMNP vouchers are distributed by the Area Agencies on Aging June 1 through September 30 on a first-come-first served basis. Eligible Seniors must apply annually and may only receive SFMNP vouchers once per year.
Not every farmers market in Iowa is set up to accept the vouchers, but some of them are. At last report the only two farmers markets in our four-county area that accept the vouchers are those in Sheldon and Hartley.
Also, younger low-income women who are pregnant or have young children may be able to get help to buy produce through the WIC program. Contact your WIC representative for more information.
Again the Sheldon Farmers Market is every Monday evening from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. through Celebration Days in early September in the Union Depot on South 2nd Avenue, south of Dairy Dandy.
