Sheldon, Iowa — About 20 acres of grass were burned in a fire on Monday, April 7, 2025, in Sheldon.
According to Sheldon Fire Chief Brad Hindt, around 12:10 p.m., the Sheldon Fire Department responded to a call about a grass fire located on the RiseFest Grounds, northwest of the Fareway store in Sheldon.
Hindt says they spotted the fire as they arrived. He explained that the blaze originated from a previously burning pit when wind carried a hot ember, igniting nearby grass and a fence line. The fire was spreading southward towards homes, but was contained before causing any damage beyond the vegetation.
Chief Hindt reports that the fire burned about 20 acres.
He says the firefighters who responded were on the scene for about 45 minutes.
On Friday, the Sheldon firefighters were called to a ditch fire. Chief Hindt says the Friday fire was a controlled burn. Hindt says it’s a friendly reminder that when you do a controlled burn, please call the county Sheriff’s office in the county you live in, so they are aware of it.
