Sheldon, Iowa — A Sheldon home is uninhabitable until repairs can be made after a fire call Thursday night.

Sheldon Fire Company Chief Brad Hindt says that at about 10:00 p.m., firefighters were called to 407 Oak Street for the report of the roof on fire. When they got there, firefighters found smoke coming from the eaves of the roof.

He says firefighters entered the main floor and could find no smoke or fire there. But with the help of the thermal imaging camera, they were able to see a hot spot in the ceiling. At that time, Hindt says firefighters pulled down the ceiling in the dining room and living room to gain access to the small fire, which was quickly put out with minimal water. Firefighters overhauled and removed insulation from the ceiling looking for hot spots.

Hindt says the cause of the fire appears to have been an electrical joint box in the ceiling.

He says the house received moderate damage, but it is uninhabitable until repairs can be made. There were no injuries reported.

Hindt says the Sheldon Police Department, Sheldon Community Ambulance Team, O’Brien County EMA, The American Red Cross, and Mid-American Energy assisted with the response to the fire call.

He says the Sheldon Fire Company was back in service about two and a half hours later.
