Sioux City, Iowa — A Sheldon man has been arrested on attempted burglary charges after an unusual incident in Sioux City.
We are told that 46-year-old David Merley of Sheldon is accused of breaking into an unoccupied mobile home in Sioux City, putting on the resident’s clothes and then refusing to let the occupant in when they returned to the home. He was arrested this weekend.
Court documents tell us that the occupant says it started when he came home and found Merley in his house, wearing the occupant’s clothes. Apparently the occupant told Merley to get out. Merley is accused of saying the home was his and slamming and locking the door. A relative of the occupant arrived with a key. Merley is then accused of striking the occupant after the door was opened and a fight then ensued. Eventually, Merley tried to flee the scene, but other people detained him until law enforcement arrived.
Merley was charged with attempted second-degree burglary, a class D felony. If convicted, Merley could face up to five years in prison.
Merley faces a preliminary hearing on Wednesday, January 22nd.
At last report, Merley remained in the Woodbury County Jail in Sioux City in lieu of a $5000 bond.
