Sioux Center, Iowa — A Sheldon man has been arrested on a warrant for a felony theft charge after an incident almost exactly two years ago.
According to a criminal complaint filed with the Sioux County Clerk of Court’s Office by the Sioux Center Police Department, 39-year-old David Hofmann of Sheldon is accused of the theft of a trailer he rented. He was arrested on the warrant on Monday.
In her statement, the officer says that on Saturday, May 13th, 2023, Hofmann went to Rent-All in Sioux Center and rented a 22-foot Load Trail trailer. He rented this trailer for one day. Five days later, the officer says Hofmann had not returned the trailer. At the time of rental, Hofmann is alleged to have provided a wrong phone number and therefore, Rent-All was unable to contact Hofmann for the return of the trailer. Rent-All officials also went to the address provided, and Hofmann no longer lived there, according to the officer. She says the incident was captured on video, which also showed Hofmann driving to Rent-All and entering the store. In addition, the officer says Hofmann’s driver’s license status was barred for habitual offender. She says the trailer is valued at $5,200.
Hofmann was charged with second-degree theft, a class D felony. If convicted, he could face up to five years in prison. He also faces a misdemeanor charge of driving while barred.
He faces a preliminary hearing on the charges this coming Thursday, May 13th.
At last report, Hofmann remained in the Sioux County Jail in Orange City in lieu of a $5000 cash or surety bond.
