Sibley, Iowa – After a 34 year wait, water from the Lewis & Clark Regional Water System (L&C) finally started flowing to Sibley on October 17! Sibley is the 20th and final member to be connected and has reserved capacity of 650,000 gallons a day. A ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the connection has been scheduled for October 28.
L&C was incorporated in January 1990 and Sibley joined in October 1990. Director Larry Pedley first joined the Sibley City Council in 1985 and made the motion for the city to join L&C. Larry has served on L&C’s Board of Directors since 2006. During the October 28 ribbon cutting the new meter building will be dedicated in Pedley’s honor.
Mayor Jerry Johnson has served on the Council since 1983, the last 21 years as mayor. He credits the hard work and dedication of the staff and directors at Lewis & Clark, for finally accomplished the goal of bringing L&C water to Sibley. He thanks the Sibley City Council for their foresight and City staff for their work on the project.
Even though all 20 members are connected, construction of the 44.19 million gallon a day Base System will not be finished until 2028 when the third and final phase of the water treatment plant near Vermillion is completed. Construction started in 2022 to expand L&C to 60 MGD. This expansion is expected to be completed in 2030 and will increase Sibley’s reserved capacity to a total of one million gallons a day.
