Sioux Center Man Who Faced 11 Years In Prison Gets 8 Months’ Jail Time, Probation Instead

Orange City, Iowa — A Sioux Center man who could have had to serve 11 years in prison will instead get less than a year in jail and probation.

According to the office of Sioux County Attorney Thomas Kunstle, 22-year-old Corbin Van Briesen, of Sioux Center, was sentenced on August 4, 2025, in District Court for child endangerment causing bodily injury (a class D felony), two counts of stalking, harassment in the first degree, and domestic abuse assault. Except for the child endangerment count, the offenses were misdemeanor counts. The cases arose between August 24, 2024, and July 5, 2025, after Van Briesen was already on probation for prior criminal convictions.

Law enforcement responded to multiple incidents involving Van Briesen. He was charged with domestic assault after he forcefully tried to take a phone from a woman, attempted to pull a child from her arms, and was found to be in possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

In a separate incident, authorities investigated suspicious injuries to a 4-year-old nonverbal autistic child, which medical professionals believed were consistent with physical abuse. Van Briesen claimed he was in another room when the child was injured. He was accused of inflicting the child’s injuries, and was so charged. Additionally, he harassed the child’s mother with text messages and photos, including a video of him throwing clothes belonging to her stillborn daughter into a toilet. He also accessed her social media account without permission and uploaded sexually graphic material.

Van Briesen also faced charges for violating a no-contact order after he sent over 2400 text messages to a victim. He was charged with harassment after he used an electronic device to threaten to kill a former significant other, and later for contacting a third party to communicate with a victim, which was a violation of a no-contact order. He was also charged with harassment and stalking after he sent threatening and intimidating messages and left multiple voicemails for another significant other who had broken up with him.

In exchange for a guilty plea, charges for violating no-contact orders, possession of marijuana and paraphernalia, and child endangerment were dismissed.

The County Attorney’s Office says Van Briesen was facing a total of 11 years in prison. State prosecutors recommended that the Court impose the maximum sentence. Four of the victims exercised their right to give victim impact statements. Van Briesen’s attorney recommended that the prison sentences be suspended and Van Briesen be given probation.

The Court decided to suspend all prison sentences, sentencing Van Briesen to probation for four years and 365 days in the Sioux County Jail, with all but 270 days suspended. The Court authorized work release and ordered Van Briesen to pay criminal fines totaling $3,590. Van Briesen was also ordered to successfully complete the Iowa Domestic Abuse Program and comply with all counseling recommendations. The Court also further extended the No Contact Orders with all five victims for the maximum period of five years.
