Sioux County Sheriff Jamie Van Voorst Announces Plans To Retire At End Of 2025

Orange City, Iowa — Sioux County Sheriff Jamie Van Voorst has announced he will retire at the end of the year, concluding a 33-year career in law enforcement and nearly four years as sheriff.

In a public letter released Wednesday, Van Voorst said his decision came after much “wrestling, thought, prayer, and conversations” with his wife and family. His retirement will take effect on December 31st, 2025.

Van Voorst began his law enforcement career in 1993 with the Sioux Center Police Department before joining the Sioux County Sheriff’s Office, where he served as deputy, sergeant, and captain prior to being appointed and later elected sheriff. He called the opportunity to lead the office “one of the greatest honors” of his life.

“This public service has been my heart—an incredible journey—one I would not have traded,” Van Voorst wrote. “But as law enforcement officials know, family is everything, and law enforcement done well is heavy and all-consuming.”

Van Voorst said his decision to retire centers on spending more time with his wife, Gwen, their children, and grandchildren after decades of service. He also expressed strong confidence in the current leadership of the sheriff’s office, assuring residents that Sioux County remains “in good hands.”

“Together, we have built a foundation of strong leadership that will continue to serve this office and the citizens of Sioux County well,” he said. “I have seen firsthand the passion and dedication of so many leaders here.”

Throughout his letter, Van Voorst reflected on his faith, the community’s trust, and the relationships built across law enforcement and county government. He closed his message with a verse from 2 Timothy 4:7 — “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.”

Van Voorst thanked the Sioux County Board of Supervisors, his colleagues, and residents for their years of support.

“The road ahead for the Sioux County Sheriff’s Office is bright,” he said. “It has been an honor to serve alongside these dedicated and professional individuals.”

When we talked to Van Voorst, he stated that Chief Deputy Nate Huisenga is ready and willing to fill out the remainder of Van Voorst’s term, should he be appointed by the Sioux County Board of Supervisors.
