Smoking Materials Get Blame For Two Back-To-Back Fires Near Sibley

Sibley, Iowa — Smoking materials get the blame for two back-to-back fires in the Sibley area on Wednesday.

Sibley Fire Chief Ken Huls says the first fire between 170th and 180th Streets on Pierce Avenue was south of Jackrabbit Junction, and was called in about 2:45 p.m. He tells us they only had to spray water to put out the fire. Huls says between 500-1000 square feet of grass burned. There were no injuries and nothing of value was burned.

But while they were finishing up that call, they got another call for another grass fire near the Highway 60 off-ramp for Highway 9, northeast of Sibley. That fire was about 500 square feet, says the chief. The attack was very similar. No injuries were reported.

Fire officials advise people to be very careful with smoking materials, and especially don’t throw them out of a moving vehicle.
