Hartley, Iowa — A Spirit Lake man has been arrested on a warrant for attempted murder and felony assault charges for an incident that allegedly happened in May in Hartley and one that allegedly occurred on Wednesday in Primghar.
Thirty-three-year-old Johnathan Oldenkamp of Spirit Lake faces charges of attempted murder related to an incident that occurred in May. The O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office filed a criminal complaint against him with the O’Brien County Clerk of Court’s Office, and he was subsequently arrested on a warrant on Wednesday.
In his statement, the deputy says from their perspective the incident started on May 25th, when they received a 911 call from Fernando Curiel, who reported he had been driving westbound on Highway 18 in Hartley, when someone pulled alongside his car and shot at him. He turned around to try to get away, but the suspect vehicle followed him, he said, and shot at him again. Curiel was struck but managed to drive to Sanford Sheldon Hospital. With the assistance of video surveillance and after they put out a bulletin to area law enforcement, the suspect vehicle was located and stopped by the Spirit Lake Police. The driver was allegedly Johnathan Oldenkamp. Officers asked Curiel about that name, and he said that he had been Oldenkamp’s supervisor at AMPI, and that Oldenkamp had recently been terminated.
After investigating ballistics evidence, cell phone records, searching the storage unit where Olenkamp had been living, and interviewing Oldenkamp, he was charged in connection with the incident. When he was arrested on Wednesday, O’Brien County Sheriff’s officials say he kicked Deputy Lee Vellema and Sheriff Bruce Devereaux.
Oldenkamp was charged with attempted murder, a class B felony, and two counts of assault on a peace officer (now known as “assault on persons in certain occupations”), a class D felony. If convicted, Oldenkamp could face up to 25 years in prison on the attempted murder charge, and five years each on the assault charges.
He faces a preliminary hearing on Monday, December 22nd.
At last report, Oldenkamp remained in the O’Brien County Jail in Primghar in lieu of bond. O’Brien County Jail staff say his bond on the attempted murder charge is $25,000, with a bond of $5,000 each on the assault charges, for a total of $35,000.
