Three Departments Help Put Out Cornstalk Fire Near Granville

Granville, Iowa — Three fire departments were called out to a fire on Monday, October 13, 2025, near Granville.

According to Granville Fire Chief Karl Kellen, at about 6:15 p.m., the Granville Fire Department was called to the report of a cornstalk fire at 4718 Monroe Avenue, two miles east and a mile south of Granville. The fire department was assisted by the Hospers and Paullina fire departments per their auto aid agreement.

When they got there, the chief says the fire department saw smoke from smoldering cornstalks in a bunker. He says they extinguished the stalks.

Kellen says no injuries were reported.

He says the farmer had been grinding cornstalks in a tub grinder. The fire appeared to have been caused by something that went through the grinder and caused sparks, which ignited the cornstalks.

Chief Kellen reports that the damage was limited to the cornstalks — about 10 bales-worth were lost.

He says the firefighters who responded were on the scene for a little over an hour.
