Palmyra, Syria — Two Iowa Army National Guard Soldiers and one U.S. civilian were killed, and three others were injured in an enemy attack Saturday, Dec. 13, 2025, in Palmyra, Syria.
According to the Iowa National Guard, the attack occurred while the soldiers were conducting a key leader engagement as part of their assigned mission in the ongoing counter-ISIS and counter-terrorism efforts in the region. In accordance with Department of War policy, the names of the deceased Soldiers are being withheld until 24 hours after next-of-kin notifications are complete. The names are scheduled to be released to the public this Sunday, December 14th, at 5:00 p.m., pending release authority from the Department of War.
Maj. Gen. Stephen Osborn, adjutant general of the Iowa National Guard, says that their priority right now is supporting the families of the fallen and wounded soldiers. He says the entire Iowa National Guard grieves for this terrible loss, and they stand together to support the Soldiers and their families.
Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds has asked that all Iowans stand united in supporting them and lifting them up in prayer during this incredibly difficult time. She asks Iowans to also pray for the fast and full recovery of the wounded soldiers.
