Unity Point Takes Over Sioux City MercyOne Hospital

Sioux City, Iowa — As of Monday, there is only one company owning both major hospitals in Sioux City.

According to a press release from MercyOne, UnityPoint Health and MercyOne Siouxland Medical Center signed a letter of intent in May for UnityPoint Health to acquire MercyOne Siouxland Medical Center and its facilities, including the hospital, physician practices, and home care services. MercyOne officials say the decision reflects a thoughtful commitment on the part of these respected local medical communities to enhance access to high-quality healthcare for residents of Sioux City and surrounding communities.

Scott Kizer, President and Chief Executive Officer of UnityPoint Health, says that as the healthcare landscape evolves across the Siouxland region and even nationally, they continually evaluate opportunities to strengthen local healthcare in the communities they serve. He says that UnityPoint Health is deeply invested in preserving access to care throughout all its communities; recruiting, retaining, and developing the best possible healthcare workforce; and providing an exceptional experience to all their patients.

Bob Ritz, Chief Executive Officer of MercyOne, says that UnityPoint and MercyOne have a shared goal to do what’s best for the Sioux City community. He says they strongly believe the best way to maintain access to care in Sioux City, to become sustainable long-term, and to ensure a smooth transition for patients and employees, was for UnityPoint Health to acquire MercyOne Siouxland Medical Center, which became final on Monday.

The new name of MercyOne Sioux City is UnityPoint Health-St. Luke’s Downtown.

Sources say while Mercy’s name will no longer be on one of the medical helicopters in Sioux City, there will continue to be two medical helicopter services based there.
