Utility Providers Urge Precautions To Prevent Frozen Pipes

Northwest Iowa – With the extreme cold comes a reminder from water service providers.

They’re urging customers to take precautions to avoid frozen pipes. They recommend running a pencil lead size stream from a faucet, especially if you’ve had frozen pipes in the past.

They add you can check the temperature of the water by placing a thermometer in the flow from the cold water faucet. They say anything below 35 degrees is cause for concern.

Public Works officials say they’re also concerned about the growing potential of broken water mains. They say the lack of snow cover, combined with the extreme cold, will cause frost to penetrate the ground deeper than it normally does.
