Iowa Great Lakes (KUOO) — Walleye season is wrapping up on several area lakes. The season runs through February 14th on Big Spirit Lake, East Okoboji, and West Okoboji. It reopens May 2nd, Walleye Weekend. Those are the only lakes in Iowa that have a closed season for Walleye.

Meanwhile, planning is well underway for the 44th Annual Iowa Great Lakes Walleye Weekend. Last year, the big prize was caught on Big Spirit Lake, just two hours after the contest started. Dawn Ingvaldson of Albert Lea, MN, went home with $43,000 as she was the only one to catch a tagged fish during the weekend. Registration is now open for Walleye Weekend, and Morgan Strauss, with the Iowa Great Lakes Chamber, talks about this year’s event.
There are 10 walleye that are tagged and released into the chain of the Iowa Great Lakes. The contest starts at midnight on Saturday, May 2nd, and ends on May 3rd at 11:59 PM. The extended contest goes through August 31st. You can find more information on the rules and how to register for Walleye Weekend at okobojichamber.com/walleye-weekend/.
