Western Iowa Cattlemen Set Up Fundraiser To Help Nebraska Ranchers Hit By Wildfires

Nemaha, Iowa (RI) — A group of western Iowans are sending help to ranchers in west central Nebraska after recent wildfires burned up over 800,000 acres in the Sandhills.

Seth Smith, who raises cattle near Nemaha, Iowa, says the wildfires destroyed grazing land, forcing Nebraska farmers to rely heavily on hay to feed their cattle.

Smith and the Sac County Cattlemen’s Association have secured a discount for what are known as “lick tubs,” which provide cattle with nutrients and minerals they may not be getting from hay, and they’re raising money to send a semi-load of lick tubs to affected Nebraska cattle operations.

They’ve started an account for cash donations under the name Sandhills Ranch Relief.

Donations can be made by mailing a check to 2561 175th Street, Nemaha, Iowa 50567, dropping off a check at Security Trust & Savings Bank in Storm Lake, or sending funds via Venmo to Etta‑Smith‑5 with “Lick Tubs” noted in the memo line.

Smith says Nebraska ranchers won’t have grass for grazing cattle this summer, so the need will last for many months.
