Sheldon, Iowa– A Baxter, Minnesota woman was taken to the hospital after a crash in Sheldon on Monday, June 9, 2025.
The Sheldon Police Department reports that at about 10:45 a.m., 24-year-old Amaya Houle of Baxter, Minnesota, was driving a 2012 Jeep Compass eastbound on the Highway 60 off-ramp in southern Sheldon. They tell us that 82-year-old Erwin Wiernga of Sheldon was northbound on McKinley Avenue in a 2014 Freightliner semi.
The report says that Houle was stopped at the stop sign as the semi was going north toward the intersection. The officer says Houle pulled out as the Wiernga semi was going by and hit the trailer tires. Houle apparently told the officer that she did not see the semi because her passenger was sleeping and in her way.
SCAT took Houle to Sanford Sheldon Hospital.
Houle’s Jeep Compass sustained $8000 in damages and was totaled in the accident, and Wiernga’s Freightliner semi sustained $2500 in damages.
