Arie Postma, age 85 of Sanborn, IA passed away at the Prairie View Nursing Home in Sanborn on Monday, May 5, 2014.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, May 9th at 10:30 a.m. at the First Reformed Church in Sanborn. Visitation will be held on Thursday, May 8th at the First Reformed Church in Sanborn from 2:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., with the family present from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Thursday evening. Burial will be at Roseland Cemetery near Sanborn.
The Sanborn Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements for 85 year-old Arie Postma of Sanborn.
Arie Postma was born on October 23, 1928, Sheldon, Iowa. He was the son of Peter and Katherine (Tensen) Postma. He lived his youth in rural Sheldon and later rural Sanborn, Iowa where he attended a country school through the eighth grade.
He was united in marriage to Rosemary Pekelder of Sheldon, Iowa on February 22, 1949, at Rosemary’s parents’ home. They farmed north of Sanborn, Milford, Iowa and south of Sanborn until they started the Bowl- Mor Lanes in Sanborn in 1956. It was four lanes, and later Arie added two more lanes. They owned it until 1964. Arie started hauling milk cans part-time in the summer of 1956, relieving full time men. In March of 1964, Arie became a full-time employee of AMPI. He was can route manager from 1965 to 1977. In 1977, Arie became floor manager of the cheese processing until he retired. Arie was also a member of the Sanborn Fire Department. He was a member of the First Reformed Church of Sanborn, Iowa.
In their retirement, Arie and Rose enjoyed many winters in Arizona, and summers at Cutty’s of Okoboji, making memories with their grandchildren there. In the summer and fall Arie enjoyed his lawn mowing and lawn care service for several people around the town of Sanborn. He also loved gardening, watching the birds and squirrels in his back yard. He also collected toy tractors as a hobby. Arie loved to tell stories of his childhood school days and farming with horses as a boy.
His last few months were spent being tended to with loving care by his wife, family and especially Sanford Hospice, until Tuesday, April 29 when he entered Prairie View. He passed away on Monday, May 5, 2014 at Prairie View in Sanborn.
Those left to cherish his memory and his story-telling are his wife, Rosemary of 65 years; his children: Mary and Reggie Kelley of Fairmont, MN, Rodney Postma of Sheldon, IA, Alvina and Larry Reitsma, and Dennis and Joy Postma of Sanborn, IA; 9 grandchildren; 6 step-grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; 6 step-great-grandchildren; one brother, Richard and Marlene Postma of Sheldon, IA; two sisters-in-law: Anne Postma of Sibley, IA and Shirley Mulder of Sanborn, IA.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Lucy Boender; four brothers: Clarence Postma (3 years old), Otto Postma, Clarence Postma, Jerold and Lois Postma; one daughter-in-law, Sue Postma; one great-grandson, Jacob Van Den Brink.
