Delores Portz, age 74, of Sheldon, Iowa passed away on Wednesday, December 18, 2013 at the Hilltop Care Center in Spirit Lake, Iowa.
Her services will be 10:30 A.M. Saturday, December 21, 2013 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Sheldon, Iowa with the Fr. Allan Riecks ~ officiating. Burial will be in St. Patrick’s Catholic Cemetery in Sheldon, Iowa.
Visitation will be Friday, December 20, 2013 after 2:00 P.M. with the Family present from 4:00 – 7:30 P.M. at the Vander Ploeg Funeral Home in Sheldon, Iowa. A Christian Wake Service will be at 7:00 P.M. and a CDofA Rosary will be prayed at 7:30pm.

Delores Angela Portz, the daughter of Andrew and Angela (Buckley) Ahlers was born on August 27, 1939 on the family farm near Remsen, Iowa. Delores attended St. Mary’s Catholic School in Remsen graduating in 1957. After high school she worked at Klies Implement in LeMars, Iowa. On August 8, 1959 she was united in marriage to Raphael N. Portz at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Remsen, Iowa. They made their home in Sheldon, Iowa, where Delores worked for Dr.’s. Poppen and Hemerson Veterinary Clinic in Sheldon, she owned and operated Del-Ray Flowers in Sheldon for 10 years and most of all she was a beloved mother and homemaker. Delores passed away on Wednesday, December 18, 2013 at the Hilltop Care Center in Spirit Lake, Iowa reaching the age of 74 years, 3 months and 21 days.
Delores was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Catholic Daughters of America and the Ladies Guild. She was also a member of the Red Hat Society. She enjoyed playing cards, especially Bridge, cooking, baking pies, FOX News and was an avid political follower.
Delores leaves to cherish her memory, her husband of 54 years, Ray; their 5 children, Tom and Laura Portz of Minneapolis, MN; Mary and Dr. Andrew Brevik of Spirit Lake, IA; Lois and Ron Cooke of Minneapolis, MN; Darla and Jerry Blomgren of Iowa City, IA; Jason Portz of Durango, CO; 6 grandchildren, Nick and Sarah, Drew, Katy, Parker and Dallas; 2 sisters and their spouses, Jean and Gerald Portz of Sheldon, Janiece and Charles Bohlke of LeMars, IA; 2 brothers-in-law, Orville Portz of Remsen, IA and Michael Lovely of Sioux Falls, SD; a sister-in-law, Millie Portz of Sheldon, IA and numerous nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.
Delores is preceded in death by her parents and four sisters, Joan Portz, Patricia Lovely, Lois Ahlers and Carol Ann Ahlers and a brother-in-law, Donald Portz.
