Dr. Kenneth “Doc” Fertig

Dr. Kenneth “Doc” Fertig, age 79, of Sheldon, Iowa, passed away on Wednesday, August 8, 2012 at the Sanford Senior Care in Sheldon, Iowa.

His service will be 11:00 A.M. Monday, August 13, 2012 at the Sheldon United Methodist Church in Sheldon, with Rev. Marvin Lindley officiating. Burial with a graveside service will be held at 10:30 A.M. at the East Lawn Cemetery in Sheldon.

Visitation with the family present will be from 2:00 P.M. until 4:00 P.M. Sunday, August 12, 2012 at the Vander Ploeg Funeral Home in Sheldon.

Dr. Kenneth Olson Fertig, the son of Eugene and Hilma (Olson) Fertig was born April 21, 1933 in Odebolt, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed in the First Presbyterian Church in Odebolt. He received his education in Odebolt, graduating from Odebolt High School in 1951. Ken then went on to Iowa State University in Ames and received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 1957. Ken served in the Army during the Berlin Crisis and Korean War. He set up his veterinary practice in Sheldon, where he practiced until 1993. On June 1, 1958, Ken was united in marriage to Janet Ogden in Odebolt, Iowa. To this union three children were born; Scott, Steven and Susan. Ken passed away at Sanford Senior Care in Sheldon on Wednesday, August 8, 2012 reaching the age of 79 years, 3 months and 17 days.

He was an active member in the Sheldon United Methodist Church. He served on the Sheldon Public School Board and held many offices (including president) in the Iowa Veterinary Medical Association and was awarded the President’s Award in 1990. He served on the Village Northwest Board as president, and was on the committee to help found the Village. He also was president of the Sheldon Industrial Development Corporation. He loved his family, the Sheldon Orabs, and the ISU Cyclones. He also loved to travel, golf, fish and read. After retirement, the Fertig’s enjoyed their Spirit Lake Cottage, visiting their children and grandchildren and wintering in Mesa, Arizona.

He is survived by his wife, Janet; three children, Scott (Pam) of Midlothian, Texas, Steven of McAllen, Texas, and Susan (Darrin) Duffy of Gilbert, Arizona; eight grandchildren, Jillian and Jaime Fertig, Lauren and Mackenzie Fertig, Katelyn, Kyle, Austin and Allyson Duffy; also other relatives and friends.

Ken was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Phyllis Hall and brother-in-law, Bob Hall and sister-in-law Judy Mandernach.
