Harold Hatting

Harold B. Hatting age 89 of Ashton, IA died Sunday, September 14, 2014 at the Sibley Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Sibley, IA.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, September 17, 2014 at the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ashton, with Father Alan Reicks and Father Timothy Hogan concelebrating. Burial will follow in the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Ashton. Visitation will be Tuesday, September 16th from 2:00 to 7:00 p.m. with the family present from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the St. Mary’s Catholic Church. There will be a rosary at 4:00 p.m. and a vigil service at 6:30 p.m.

Harold B. Hatting was born on August 16, 1925 in Ashton, Iowa, the son of Henry B. and Margaret (Seitz) Hatting. He grew up in Ashton and attended St. Joseph’s Catholic School there. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in December 1943 and served in World War II until he was honorably discharged on April 21, 1946 with rank of Private First Class. On March 27, 1967, Harold was united in marriage to Ethel Pryde at the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ashton, IA. The couple farmed near Ashton until retiring in 1982. Ethel passed away in March of 1985. Harold was a lifelong member of the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ashton. He enjoyed playing cards; coffee with his friends; going to flea markets, auctions and garage sales; and wintering in Texas. Harold moved to the Sibley Nursing and Rehab this past February.

Harold is survived by his special friend, Wilma Hatting of Sibley, IA; two siblings, Donald Hatting of Sibley, IA and Marcella “Sally” Klein of Ashton, IA; and many nieces, nephews and other extended family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Ethel; seven siblings: Bernadine Arning, Martin Hatting, Evelyn Schierholt, Charles Hatting, Lawrence Hatting, Margaret Eben and Henry Hatting in infancy; two step-sisters: Regina Muilengburg and Caroline Keninger.
