Mr. Harvey Vander Pol, age 88, of Orange City, passed away on Thursday, November 20, 2014, at the Royale Meadows Care Center in Sioux Center.
There will be a memorial service on Monday, November 24, at 11:00am, at the First Reformed Church in Orange City. The Rev. Mark Haverdink and the Rev. Timothy Breen will officiate. Interment will be prior to the service at the Newkirk Cemetery in rural Hospers. There will be a family prayer service on Monday, at 9:30am, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.
Visitation will be after 2:00pm on Sunday, with the family present from 2:00pm to 4:00pm at the funeral home.
Harvey Eldon was born on April 25, 1926, in rural Hospers, the son of Harry and Johanna (Oolbekkink) Vander Pol. He was raised in the Newkirk area, where he graduated from high school.
On October 11, 1945, he married Carol Faye Sipma, in rural Alton. He then served in the United States Army at the end of World War II. They farmed in the Newkirk area until 1990, when they retired into Orange City. In June of this year, he became a resident of Royale Meadows.
Mr. Vander Pol was currently a member of the First Reformed Church. In earlier years, he belonged to the Newkirk Reformed Church, where he participated in Men’s Brotherhood. He was also a member of the Pressman-Kosters American Legion Post, and he enjoyed golfing.
Survivors include his wife of more than 69 years; five children and their spouses, Linda and Mike Vrieze, of Sioux City; Shirley and Bob Mouw, of Alton; Rhonda and Con Van Heuvelen, of Alton; Jim and Emily Vander Pol, of Hospers; and Cara and Dave Mouw, of Underwood; fourteen grandchildren, Todd Vander Pol, Heather (Randy) Howard, Dawn Vrieze, Jennifer (Jeremy) Lacefield, Gina (Mike) Schuetz, Rob (Kris) Mouw; Benjie (Tory) Van Heuvelen, Maryssa Van Heuvelen, Braden Van Heuvelen, Michelle (John) Adams, Michael (Brittany) Vander Pol, Crisinda (Brian) Tooker, Sara (Tony) Morris, and Samantha Mouw; nineteen great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Arlene Vander Pol, of Orange City; his wife’s step-siblings, Bob (Rachel) Van Roekel, of Orange City, and Shirley (Dan) De Ruyter, of Sioux Center; and extended family friends, Shirley and Art Vogel, of Orange City.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Harvey Dean Vander Pol; two siblings, Gertrude (Frank) De Graaf and Arthur Vander Pol; his father-in-law, Sip Sipma; his step-mother-in-law, Arabella Spijker; two siblings-in-law, Marjorie (Bill) Roghair and Bill Sipma; and a granddaughter-in-law, Kimberly Mouw.
Memorials will be directed to the Orange City Area Home Health and Hospice.
