Henry William was born on November 30, 1923, the son of John and Jennie (Lammers) Addink, on a farm near Sioux Center, IA. The youngest of seven children, he attended a country school and then helped on the family farm. At age 18, he volunteered to join the U.S. Navy and served as a torpedo man aboard the USS Carbonero during World War II.
On February 13, 1947, he married Mary Kiel and began farming near Sioux Center and then Orange City.
