Marvin E. De Vries

Marvin E. De Vries, age 90 of Sibley, Iowa died Sunday, June 30, 2013 at Osceola Community Hospital in Sibley, IA.

Funeral service will be 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 3rd at the United Methodist Church in Sibley, IA, with Pastor Shannon Pascaul.

Burial will follow at Holman Township Cemetery in Sibley, with full military honors.

Visitation will be Tuesday, July 2nd from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m., with the family present from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Jurrens Funeral Home of Sibley.

Marvin Edward De Vries was born in Rushmore, Minnesota on December 31, 1922 to Martin and Grace (Olthoff) De Vries. He attended Holman #8 School and Sibley High School. After his education he remained with his family and helped with the family farm. On December 26, 1945 Marvin was united in marriage to Trena Risius in Sibley, IA. He entered the United States Army on January 10, 1946 and was honorably discharged on April 5, 1947. He returned home to his wife, Trena and they began farming west of Sibley in 1948 and retired in 2006. In August of 2010 Marvin entered Country View Manor in Sibley.

Marvin was a long-time member of the Trinity Reformed Church in Sibley, where he was Elder, Deacon and Sunday School Treasurer. In 2000 he joined the United Methodist Church in Sibley.

Marvin enjoyed watching NASCAR, reading newspapers and farm magazines, as well as his coffee time at Sibley’s cafes with his friends. Most of all Marvin was proud to be a farmer and good provider for his wife and family.

On June 25, 2013 Marvin was admitted to the Osceola Community Hospital in Sibley, where he remained until this past Sunday, June 30, 2013, where he died at the age of 90.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Trena De Vries of Sibley, IA; a son, Gary (wife Sandra) De Vries of Sibley, IA; a daughter, Pamela (husband John) Soderholm of Worthington, MN; six grandchildren, Matthew De Vries, Amanda Carney, Alyssa Hietbrink, Brian, Craig and Deron Soderholm; four great-granddaughters, Mallory and Madilyn Carney and Emma and Annika Hiebrink; a brother, Alvin De Vries of Chester, IA; and many nieces, nephews and other extended family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Martin and Grace De Vries; and a brother, George De Vries.
