Balance Leads Defender Men’s Basketball To Win

Sioux Center, Iowa — A 14-0 run early in the first half put the Dordt Defender men’s basketball team in the driver’s seat on the way to an 83-58 win over Mayville State (North Dakota) on Friday night, October 29 in Sioux Center.

Dordt trailed 15-6 with 15:50 left in the first half when a Luke Rankin three-point basket ignited a 14 point run highlighted by another Rankin three and long range shots by Caleb Harmsen and Cade Bleeker. Trey Hinote added a jump shot as well and the Defenders turned the momentum of the game in just under three minutes.

The Comets worked the lead back to within 30-28 with 8:02 left in the half but Dordt’s 21-12 finish to the half put the Defenders up 51-40 at intermission. Mayville State never got closer than 11 the rest of the half as Dordt held the visitors to 17 points in the second half.

Dordt was 34-61 from the floor for 56 percent and held Mayville State to 23-58 shooting for 40 percent.

Dordt converted 8-18 three-point shots and had a 38-31 rebounding advantage.

Jacob Vis had 13 points and nine rebounds with three assists. Camden Bialas had 13 points and six rebounds.

Caleb Harmsen scored 12 and was 4-4 from the three-point line and Cade Bleeker had 11.

Bryce Coppock and Luke Rankin each scored 10 and Coppock had eight rebounds and Rankin dished a steam high five assists.

Dordt is now 2-1 while Mayville State moves to 1-1.

Dordt will host Valley City State on Saturday night at 7:30.
